At The Telling Room, we empower youth through writing and share their voices with the world. As a literary arts education organization focused on young writers ages 6 to 18, we seek to build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and provide real audiences for our students. We believe that the power of creative expression can change our communities and prepare our youth for success both now and in the future.

YARMOUTH HIGH SCHOOL INTERACT CLUB

Yarmouth High School's Interact Club is a service organization lead by Yarmouth High School Students focused on local and global community service. Through a series of volunteer events, service activities, fundraising, and international service trips Interact Club seeks to better our global and local community. Members of the Interact club help to develop and carry out a wide variety of service projects. In the past year, we have conducted a writing program at the Boys and Girls Club at Sagamore Village, hosted monthly movie nights for the town of Yarmouth, and donated $1,263 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and more.

FREEPORT FRIENDS

Freeport Friends identifies urgent needs in the Freeport community and the RSU5 schools and matches them up with a volunteer who can help. The commitment of a volunteer can range from meal prep and drop-off for a sick resident, a 10-minute boot drop off at Pownal Elementary School or filling a senior's birdfeeder to a longer-term commitment of shoveling/roof-raking for an elderly community member for a few weeks. We also collect needed items for local families in crisis. Our process is simple. We post urgent needs to our Facebook Group and we email them out to our volunteer network. A member claims and delivers on the need at hand. A few examples of some of our recent volunteer work include meal prep and delivery, dog walking for sick and elderly community members, clothing, boots and mitten drop-offs at an RSU5 school, gift card donations to a local teen in need of clothing, installing grab bars for an elderly resident and, assisting a refugee family move and settle in to the community.

SOUTHERN MAINE AGENCY ON AGING

Every stage of life brings joys and challenges unique to an individual’s circumstances. For more than four decades Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) has provided the resources, programs and people to ensure that older adults and adults living with disabilities in Cumberland and York counties maintain their vitality well past the age of sixty. SMAA Volunteer Services provides volunteer opportunities for more than 800 people each year. Possibilities include delivering Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors, providing Medicare counseling, mentoring children, helping older adults with bill paying, and many, many more. The staff in the Volunteer Services department will find the perfect match for those who want to help.

RIDING TO THE TOP THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTER

Riding To The Top Therapeutic Riding Center (RTT) was founded in 1993. Our mission is enhancing health and wellness through equine assisted activities and therapies. Located just west of Portland in Windham, Maine, RTT is the state's only year round PATH Intl. Premier Accredited Center solely dedicated to Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies. More than 250 clients visit annually, assisted by certified instructors, a herd of 19 horses and over 160 volunteers, all specially trained to assist with therapeutic riding, equine assisted learning, carriage driving and hippotherapy. Riding To The Top is a community based nonprofit, receives no federal or state funding and provides scholarships to over 60% of its clients.

HOMELESS ANIMAL RESCUE TEAM OF MAINE

HART is a no kill shelter and adoption center for cats. We are a member of the American Humane Association, the American Partnership for Pets and the New England Federation of Humane Societies. HART is staffed mostly by volunteers who are dedicated to the well being of the shelter residents. We care for pets that would otherwise be out on the street, assuring their safety, health, and comfort. Our shelter building was constructed in 2004. It was custom designed for cat sheltering and offers our residents an open environment, with climbing structures and lots of comfy beds. This environment allows the cats the freedom to play, nest, and hide, as well as form bonds with one another. All of our animals receive lots of love and attention, as well as expert veterinary care.

YMCA OF SOUTHERN MAINE

Founded in 1853, the YMCA of Southern Maine is one of the oldest YMCAs in the country. Its mission is to build strong kids, individuals, families, and communities through programs and services that promote a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all, regardless of ability to pay. Our three areas of focus (youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility) are positioned to meet Maine’s greatest needs. The Y’s four branches, five before-and-after-school sites, five camps, child care center, and dormitory serve 31,000 people each year. Last year, the YMCA of Southern Maine provided more than $2.2 million in financial assistance to nearly 5,500 youth, adults, and families to ensure community access to the Y’s programs.

A Company of Girls (ACOG) is an award-winning, nationally recognized, resiliency/prevention/mentor/leadership program for girls in Greater Portland. Our mission is to strengthen and empower girls and their families and foster community through the arts. Over our twenty plus years, hundreds of girls and their families have participated in our programs and events. ACOG’s programming enables youth to express who they are, and provides a safe outlet for girls to take risks, speak up, and be recognized for their unique and valuable voices. MY PLACE TEEN CENTER

At MPTC, we focus on giving teens the resources and life skills needed to have a successful adult life. We offer free dinners, or lunches - depending on the time we are open that particular day, to our kids each day. We focus on building strong, trusting relationships with our teens. Our programming is based upon 5 categories: Social Emotional, Health and Wellness, Workforce Readiness, Civic Engagement, and STEAM. We offer free field trips to our kids, as long as they participate in three programs per week, which qualifies them as field trip eligible as our youth leadership academy. We are also a place for teens to just come chill out and know that this is a safe haven for them, with an absolute rule of "no tolerance" for bullying of any sort. It is a place that welcomes, and embraces, each unique teen in order to help them feel like this is home because for some, this is where they get their only meal of the day, homework help, and support they need to face the daily challenges of their lives.

Mainely Girls works proactively in rural Maine communities and on the state level to bring about positive change for girls. This well established non-profit organization began twenty years ago under the Direction of Mary Orear, in Midcoast Maine, and is now based in Aroostook County. Mainely Girls supports girls by creating empowering opportunities through arts and adventure-based activities, bookclubs, mentorships and civics initiatives.

MIDCOAST HUNGER PREVENTION PROGRAM

MCHPP has offered a safe meal location in the community of Brunswick since 1983, and they are continuing their efforts to expand throughout the greater Mid Coast area. Some of the programs included in Brunswick include a soup kitchen, backpack program, summer meal program, and food bank.

STROUDWATER FOOD PANTRY

The Stroudwater Food Pantry (SFP) is a non-profit hunger relief agency that feeds the meal insecure in Southern Maine. The pantry is located on the first floor of the Stroudwater Christian Church at 1520 Westbrook Street, and open to the public for grocery distribution on Sundays from 1-3pm. As of January 2019 SFP has over 525 families actively enrolled to receive groceries, accounting for more than 1,700 people being fed on a reoccurring basis. Since opening in August 2015, SFP has collected and served over 170 tons of food, the equivalent of an estimated 851,000 meals, to people in the Greater Portland community in need of hunger relief. The Pantry relies solely on its dedicated team of volunteers to transport, sort and distribute the fresh and packaged foods to its clients.

Girls on the Run is an after school program for girls in 3rd -8th grade. The program provides a supportive environment in which girls run with their friends and coaches while learning, practicing, and applying social and emotional skills and competencies. At the end of the 10 week program, the girls participate in a celebratory 5k that focuses on their accomplishments along with their families, friends and community.

We provide more than just a bed and a meal for our guests. Guests are paired up with one of our in-house case managers to create an action plan to obtain stable housing and prevent homelessness in the future. These twelve areas are: Housing, Financial Stability, Education, Family & Children, Transportation, Safety Planning, Social, Employment, Legal, Mental Health, DV Support, and Substance Abuse.

ANIMAL REFUGE LEAGUE OF GREATER PORTLAND

The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland nurtures the connection between people and pets to advance animal welfare and improve the quality of life in our community. ARLGP provides temporary care and shelter for stray, abandoned, confiscated and relinquished animals, and places as many pets as possible into responsible and caring homes; we create awareness and support for the humane treatment of all animals; we strive to end animal overpopulation through education and the promotion of spaying and neutering.
